CBA Chess Team goes undefeated on Doughnut Day

On Wednesday, November 13th, CBA opened the Chess Shore League with Doughnut Day. All the schools in the Shore League came to CBA and played their opening round, while feasting on 840 doughnuts. This day is the beginning for each school trying to earn a Shore League and state championship.

The CBA chess team competes in the Shore League trying to bring home another Shore League and state championship like they did in 2017. The chess team will also compete in the national tournament in Florida in December. They will also travel to Ohio, and play in some local tournaments.

The Shore League is made up of several divisions, CBA is in a division with Henry Hudson, Monmouth Regional, Rumson Fair Haven, and rival High Tech. After coming second to High Tech in the division and the Shore League last year, CBA looked to get this year off on the right foot.

The CBA varsity team of Dylan Cabrita, Stephen Keyes, John Incantalupo, Alec Almeida, and John Gray faced the Monmouth Regional varsity team for their opening match and the JV team of Peter Alexanian, Andy Manatos, Jacob Dice, Chris Tsimbinos, and Andrew Chiles played the JV team of Brick High School. Both teams were dominant with two 5-0 victories.

After everyone was finished with their matches, students were invited to Alumni Hall where there was a buffet of doughnuts for the signature day. Then students could play each other for fun and practice, while getting to know someone new.

“It’s a really fun day, you get to meet people from different schools while eating doughnuts, it’s a really great time,” said Peter Alexanian.

The chess team meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the year. On Tuesdays, they practice for their upcoming match, and on Wednesdays, they will either travel to a division opponent or the other school will come to Henderson Hall.

CBA will compete next at the annual tournament held at Brookdale Community College on Saturday, November 24th. Here they will get some extra practice and more experience before the next week of the Shore League, as well as improving their ratings and trying to win first place.

CBA will try to continue to their hot start on Wednesday, December 4th when they face off against Henry Hudson.
