Antonucci’s College Football Primer: Week Three
Down falls the Ohio State Buckeyes!
Week number two in College Football saw Oregon taking down then-No. 3 ranked Ohio State in a marquee win on the road. Oregon jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up, netting a 35-28 victory in Columbus.
Iowa also picked up a huge win against top-10 team Iowa State, taking home the Cy-Hawk trophy. Iowa was led by their defense that propelled them to a 27-17 win over its in-state. The Hawkeyes’ defense caused four turnovers against a great team.
On the flip side, Texas had a horrible showing against Arkansas, losing 40-21 against a middle-of-the-pack team from the SEC. That sure doesn’t promote any confidence about their proposed move to the SEC in the coming years.
Heading into the third week of play, here are the Tom Antonucci College Football Rankings:

- Iowa
- Clemson

Cincinnati has a big test coming up in a tough matchup against Notre Dame on October 2. This game will prove if they are a real threat this year or if they are just benefiting from an easy schedule.
Notre Dame started off the season 2-0 but fell in the ranking due to poor performance against Toledo, barely escaping with a 32-29 victory, and having an overtime win against an average FSU team. The Irish have time to redeem themselves with a couple tough matchups against Wisconsin, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.
The best matchups of Week Three? Alabama will head to Gainsville for a mid-afternoon matchup of top teams. This is a rematch of last year’s SEC championship, in which the Crimson Tide dismantled Florida. The game certainly has playoff implications, but even more so for the Gators. If Florida loses, then the upcoming matchup with Georgia becomes an undisputed must win. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.
The primetime matchup will be a top-25 game as Auburn travels to Penn State. Both squads have started off 2-0 and should be a great matchup. Tune in at 7:30 on ABC.
