CBA Rugby Athlete Spotlight: Andrew White ’20
Every great team needs a leader and CBA’s varsity rugby team is no exception.
Senior captain Andrew White has been an important player on the field and even more crucial leader off the field. Being one of the most talented and inspiring players on this team, he naturally makes a great fit as team captain.
White is one of the most confident players on the team, but was humble after being named a September Student-Athlete of the Month.
“My performance was probably six out of 10 at best, and it would’ve been better if I hadn’t been injured,” White said.
The stats he posted in his three tournament appearances this season were on pace for a great year. Unfortunately for White, his season abruptly ended in the team’s third tournament due to a high ankle sprain. This injury typically puts an athlete out of action for four to eight weeks.
“Even with my injury, being around during this time is very important,” White said. “I want to make sure everyone is still working hard. As a captain, you want to show that you care about your teammates and you’re not just there to play for yourself.”
Before his ankle sprain, White’s stats through three tournament games were impressive. And while these stats are important, he takes a bigger sense of pride into his job as a leader of the team.
“The biggest part of being a leader is getting everyone on the same page and making sure we are ready to play,” he said.
With the final tournament of the season on Sunday at Cranford, White thinks his team is ready to win if they can accomplish one thing.
“Everyone needs to play for each other and everyone needs to play as one unit,” White said.
Humility is a big part of being a leader, which is something White possesses. He recognizes his own mistakes and is the first to take the fall for his teammates.
Although the fall sevens season is coming to an end, White will certainly be ready to lead his team again come the spring season.
