Election month… and counting

December is upon us, and in the eyes of around 80 million Americans, we have a new president.

On the other hand, anywhere between 51.8 and 59.2 million voters believe the results are wrong.

At the moment, pending court cases, Joe Biden is the president-elect of the United States of America. Biden earned the most votes by a president in history with an estimated 81 million votes to President Trump’s 74 million.

While Trump and his team are still holding out hope that they can overturn the election results, it seems they are definitely struggling.

As of November 30, Trump’s legal team were engaged in 26 court battles, and out of all of those, they have won zero. All of these cases are aimed at the key states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan. With nothing coming through so far, time is not on the President’s side, as the Electoral College vote date is on December 14.

Trump’s supporters seem to agree with the sentiment that the election’s results are illegitimate and fraudulent. A recent New York Times poll suggested anywhere between “70 to 80 percent” of Trump voters believe the results are incorrect. This means around 50 million Americans believe Biden is an illegitimate president-elect. Clearly, as a nation that is visibly divided, this situation does not ease the already growing tension across the country.

Though it’s been a month since the election, America is still waiting on another big election to take place: the Georgia senate runoff. It is an election that determines the balance within the senate, which is an important ally for a president to have within the government. Without the Senate majority, it is unlikely Biden will be able to push through many laws without executive orders.

Ultimately, it is all but certain that Biden will be the president-elect, and with the Electoral College convening in just a few days, our country will finally have a definitive answer.
