Icky La Boomba: The Return to Glory
Return- to go back to a place or person
Icky La Boomba….words known by any man attending CBA. It was a pivotal moment in CBA history when the Colt Crazies gathered at the CBA soccer fields, for a game…. the first game since the pandemic with fans. It was a close game, against shore rival, Long Branch. The highly anticipated match lived up to the hype, with CBA winning 3-1. This is not the story of the soccer team’s victory no, this is the story of the legendary Colt Crazies’ return to glory.
It would take many articles, to document the full impact that the Colt Crazies have on CBA. This article is a sequel to its predecessor Icky La Boomba: The Legend of the Colt Crazies. In the first article, I told the story of how the Colt Crazies came to be the best fan section in the shore, without a doubt. 2020 was a bad year for all of us, but 2021 brings the homecoming of the Colt Crazies.
The Morning Of
September 7th, 2021
It was a cool morning in Monmouth County N.J, with few clouds in the sky. It was orientation at the academy, for the Freshmen and Sophomores. The new school year was right around the corner, but one question was echoed throughout the building that day.
“You going to the game?”
The “game” could have been a plethora of different events, but the academy men knew the event that was spoken about. 4 pm, Varsity Soccer. For the students that did not know about the game, student council president, George Kruse reminded everyone:
“How many of you are doing anything at four today?”
A couple of hands went up.
“Good good, then I expect the rest of you to be down at the soccer fields at 4 today!”
Kruse’s reminder did draw some of my fellow sophomores to the game after all.
Proud to be an American
For years, the Colt Crazies have had a theme that they dress as every game. For example, there could be a “Tennis Out” where everybody dresses up like tennis players. This game although was a “USA Out” where everybody wore red, white and blue, in honor of Labor Day. The outfits, as usual, did not disappoint.
Gametime
The crowd started small, but as it got closer to game time more and more Crazies started to file in until there was a mosh pit of them. The red, and blue paint was everywhere by game time. The contest began with a roar from the CBA faithful. CBA would eventually give up the first blow of the game, going down 1-0. Minutes later, CBA scored in fantastic fashion leaving the Colt Crazies in a frenzy. One half is done. Score? 1-1.
“Icky at 2:30!”
Halftime was met with more Crazies arriving. They talked amongst themselves until a yell was heard: “Icky at 2:30!”. That yell implying that the Icky La Boomba chat would commence at two minutes, 30 seconds left in halftime. They all gathered on the very tiny bleachers that were not steady. Speaking as a Crazie at the game myself, I did not believe the bleachers would hold us but, in a miracle they somehow did. The chant was glorious, and a great experience in the crazy tradition.
The Victory
CBA eventually took the lead from Long Branch on a beautiful goal and the Crazies once again greeted them with a roar. The Colts pulled away scoring one more goal, sending the Crazies home happy. The game ended, CBA 3, Long Branch 1.
The New Beginning
Many people doubted that fans would be allowed to attend sports games this year, but with precautions, it worked beautifully. At times it seemed like the Crazies might never come back, but with the power of brotherhood and hope, they returned. This is only the beginning of a new generation of CBA fans. So when any CBA student hears of a big game coming up, they know, it’ll be time to get crazy.
