During the annual Pony Awards on April 12th, 13 members of Pegasus were inducted into the International Thespian Society (ITS). The ITS is the honor society for secondary school theater students. Membership is granted for the performance of meritorious work in theater arts and requires each student to obtain points for different roles in a production company.
With the induction of the 13 new members, Pegasus now has 22 total students who have been inducted into the ITS.
On Monday, April 29th, the Count Basie Center announced their annual Basie Awards nominations, which honors excellence in high school theater in Monmouth County. Pegasus was nominated for two company awards: Outstanding Set Design (The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940) and Outstanding Small Pit Ensemble (All Shook Up).
Junior Jonathan Abadir was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role of Eddie McCuen in The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.
Finally, four members of Pegasus were selected to be a part of Two River Theater’s 2019-20 class of Metro Scholars. Jack Cusick, Andrew Guarino, Hailey Karinja (Trinity Hall), Claire Munley (RBR) were chosen for the program after their outstanding work with Pegasus. Junior Jonathan Abadir was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role of Eddie McCuen in The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.
This year-long, highly competitive program, open to high school juniors from across New Jersey, is a unique opportunity for students to learn about professional theater. In addition to seeing every show at Two River Theater for free, selected students take workshops and master classes with professional artists and assist TRT staff throughout the company.
“We’ve had an amazing year and the recognition all the students have received is just icing on the cake,” Theater Director Mr. Marcos Orozco said. “It’s a testament to their dedication and hard work and how much they care about each other and the program.”
As a top-three small theater company, Pegasus also qualified for the New Jersey Teen Arts Festival after their performance at the Monmouth Arts Festival. They will be performing in the competition later this month.
