Russian Aggression Invokes Biden-Putin Meeting

Russian Aggression Invokes Biden-Putin Meeting

At the moment, the world is in a state where the three strongest nations in the world are at each other’s throats once again.

Last month, it was Chinese posturing over Taiwan, which has still not stopped, by the way. Rather it has been drowned out by the new military build up from Russia.

Russia’s military has been postured at the Ukrainian border, the last time this took place was back in 2014, when Russia invaded Ukraine and took Crimea. A reported 175,000 troops could be used to invade Ukraine, this would result in a massive loss of life.

To avoid this, President Joe Biden and Russian president Vladimir Putin had a virtual meeting on Tuesday, discussing the situation, and Biden seeming to make a stand against the Russian leader. Even though Putin denied any claims of a buildup, instead accusing Ukraine of building up its military.

Biden does not want a repeat of 2014, and his attempt at preventing this was to threaten Putin economically, threatening to place sanctions on him, and cancel projects such as a pipeline through Germany, which would severely impact European oil. Biden also threatened to freeze the Russian banking system, impacting their economy heavily.

Putin claimed that Russia as a nation feels threatened by the continued attempts of NATO to introduce Ukraine, which is likely a defense for his build-up at the border. Claiming the NATO moving further east towards Russian borders is a national security threat.

Ultimately, Biden made it clear that the United States would not be using its own military to defend Ukraine, what would happen if Russia does decide to enter Ukraine is unknown. But it is important to remember that innocent Ukrainian lives are at risk, hopefully these leaders can come together to avoid a repeat of 2014, and further bloodshed.
