Squid Game: How a Korean Netflix Show Took the World by Storm
A month after being released, the Korean survival drama Squid Game is set to become Netflix’s most popular show of all time. How did this happen?
Squid Game was written all the way back in 2008 by Hwang Dong-Hyuk. For the past ten years, it has been declined by countless producers, until Netflix agreed to create the show (which was originally intended to be a feature film).
The show was released on September 17th and is now projected to hit 82 million viewers within its first 28 days after release. In South Korea, it reached number one within two days and did the same in America within four days.
Squid Game itself stars Lee Jung-Jae as “Seong Gi-Hun”, Park Hae-Soo as “Sang-woo”, HoYeon Jung as “Kang Sae-Byeok”, and Oh Young-soo as “Oh Il-Man”.
The story itself revolves around 456 players choosing to participate in six children’s games to win a cash prize of $45.6 Billion. The games are shown to have a twist in the first episode “Red Light, Green Light” when the punishment for being “eliminated” is death-quite literally being eliminated.
I watched every episode of the show within the last three days, and with its nine-episode first season, I couldn’t recommend it more. The actor’s performances are entertaining and the show was an outstanding watch. The show acts as a study of human nature and greed, and the way its characters interact perfectly portrays this.
With the massive positive response, the show has gotten, it is all but confirmed to have a second season. You can watch Squid Game on Netflix now.
