The Colts Return to The Ice for Their ‘22-’23 Campaign
It was a cold March night. March 7, 2022, to be exact. The significance of this night? The evening the boys in blue brought home another hockey state championship. Finishing 27-0-3 with a Non-Public A title, it is safe to say it was a historic hockey season for CBA.
One can only wonder, after having such an amazing season last year, what is it going to be like this year?
Losing key players like Zach Wagnon and John Donohoe, the team certainly has some holes to fill. Donohoe, who was a fantastic goalie for the Colts, is off to college, leaving the goalie spot wide open for the taking. Competing for the spot will be sophomore Andrew Skorupka and freshmen Rocco Morenzi. It will be interesting to see who Coach Andy leans toward when the season begins.
CBA also lost key scorers like Evan Brown and Aidan Guinnessey. Their losses will be felt but despite the team looking different this year, there are still a few guys who return to the ice for CBA.
The “Watchlist” Players:
One name to note is senior Pat Reilly, who had an excellent season last year. Scoring two goals in the state championship, Reilly became the hero the Academy needed. After the high school season, Reilly’s skills and abilities earned him a spot on Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League (USHL). After many speculated he would spend his time in Iowa for the winter, Reilly chose to come back and help the Colts in his farewell season. Look out for the senior captain as he takes on his final season with the Colts.
Another name to add to the watchlist is senior Will Thygeson, who was the hero for the state championship soccer team back in the fall. Scoring a goal in the state championship, you can expect him to take on a similar leadership role that he had on the soccer team. With four goals in last year’s championship run, Thygeson looks to notch on another great season.
Seniors are always an important part of any team, but it is also time for the Class of 2024 to step up as they take on the role of being upperclassmen. With many new juniors joining the roster this year, guys like Christian Chouha, who was injured last year, and Derek Fiore are definitely worth looking out for.
The Schedule:
Facing off against tough opponents in the Gordon Conference, there are many games to look out for on the schedule. Opponents like Bergen Catholic, Seton Hall Prep, Don Bosco, and Delbarton are always dangerous threats year in and year out. With a rigorous schedule, this season could look very different from previous years. All we can do now is watch and enjoy another CBA hockey campaign.
It will be a completely different CBA hockey team this year, and one wonders: will they win it all again? Find out when the season kicks off on December 13, against Princeton Day.
