Eight Movies You Need to See Now

During this year’s Christmas Break, the weather was bleak, grey, and downright ugly at times. So like many others, I, along with my girlfriend, spent a portion of the break watching movies, whether that was on Netflix, Disney+, or Prime Video. After watching multiple movies, I could not help but recommend some of the best ones we watched. Spoiler warning for the information below.

8. The Suicide Squad:  – Prime Video

Obscenely funny. Each character is acted out to an extreme and it makes for a wonderfully hilarious movie. A star-studded cast, Margot Robbie, John Cena, Idris Elba, and many more make this movie a great watch. Frankly, much better than this first one, it doesn’t attempt to be a dark and brooding action movie, rather it embraces the weirdness and randomness of its characters.

7. The Edge of Seventeen – Netflix

Hailee Steinfeld plays a believable struggling seventeen-year-old, she has a connection with her teacher, played by Woody Harrelson. A great story and it hits hard on the emotional beats, Steinfeld does an outstanding job of portraying a struggling teen in a world that seems to reject her.

6. Love Hard – Netflix

I know. I know. It’s a Christmas love story. But don’t miss this one. This movie is really more than just the typical love story, though it follows the same tropes of the romantic drama, it adds comedy and a sense of realistic situations to a current-day romantic comedy. I normally am not a fan of this genre, but Love Hard is clearly an exception.

5. tick, tick … BOOM – Netflix

Andrew Garfield delivers an Oscar-worthy performance as Jonathan Larson, the famous Broadway playwright. This movie is honestly the closest thing we will ever get to a perfect depiction of a broadway musical to the big screen. Tick, Tick… BOOM! is a masterpiece, and it is obvious the people who wrote and directed this had heaps of passion for the subject matter. Lin Manuel Miranda, who is essentially synonymous with amazing Disney songs at this point, takes his broadway knowledge from Hamilton and other productions and proves his passion for theatre in his directorial debut. With other theatrical superstars in the movie, Tick, Tick… BOOM! is one of the two great performances Garfield has given this year.

4. Army of Thieves – Netflix

A prequel that was released in the same year of Army of The Dead, this movie is far superior to its sequel. Matthias Schweighöfer gives an outstanding performance and his character was the best part of the movie. The heist theme of the movie is interesting and done in a different fashion compared to typical heist movies. The ending isn’t a happy one, it is supposed to be a middle ground, should the audience be happy for the main character, or sad about what just transpired?

3. Red Notice- Netflix

The funniest movie on this list, Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds make this movie great. The chemistry between Reynolds and Johnson throughout the movie makes for unending laughter. Then, by far the best part of the movie is the ending, this twist is out of the blue, but makes sense when the movie points it out. It comes out of the left field, and for that reason, I can’t help but recommend it.

2. Don’t Look Up – Netflix

A morbid message for humanity done right. This cast again has plenty of stars, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lawerence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, and Timothée Chalamet. All of these stars contribute to an outstanding movie that mirrors real-world situations. The threat of a meteor endangers Earth, and just when it looks like the government will act, politics intrude on the plan to save the world. The movie acts as a message to the human race to get their act together, specifically on climate change, and the movie does this insanely well, with a heartbreaking ending.

1. Spiderman: No Way Home – Movie Theatre

This obviously had to be number one. This movie was so good. It fixes the complaints so many fans had about Tom Holland’s spiderman and includes a second great performance from Andrew Garfield, as well an enjoyable inclusion of Tobey Maguire. The only reasonable issue I had with this movie was the lack of utilization of its villains such as the Lizard, Sandman, and Doctor Octopus who was used as a punching bag for jokes. Besides this, I genuinely think this movie is the best movie Marvel has produced. They took a risk with this movie, and it paid off.

Ultimately, these movies were amazing to watch, I enjoyed each of them thoroughly. Be sure to check them all out, and hope Andrew Garfield wins that grammy.
