Real men wear pink for the cure

Real men wear pink for the cure

In the Academy Oath, CBA students pledge to serve and stand for those in need.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the Christian Brothers Academy Student Council wanted to make sure Academy men did their part to support this important initiative.

“CBA is a school of service, where students give back to their communities, so I made a point this year to promote student service throughout the school year from buying a pink shirt for [breast cancer] charities, to no shave November for the food drive, and various other traditions,” said senior Nick Emilio, student council president.

Every Wednesday in October, the CBA student council has urged the boys to wear something pink to show support in finding a cure. Statistically, cancer affects everyone in some way, shape, or form. The student council, and student body in general, also wanted to show support for those in the CBA community who know someone who is fighting, or has fought, a battle against breast cancer.

The student council sold $10 pink t-shirts to students and faculty with the CBA school seal on the front and “Real men wear pink for the cure” on the back. In addition, the school had a dress down on October 18th, where students wore pink and gave donations towards the cause. Overall, the student body raised $1100 for St. Mary by the Sea, a safe haven for women with cancer.

The non-profit organization in Ocean Grove has recently celebrated its 10th year of service, helping over 10,000 women over the years. Their mission is “to support women with cancer through integrative services which complement their medical treatment and empower, educate and support their healing: mind, body and soul.” They have a multitude of programs from prayer to yoga. Some of these activities include counseling, guided imagery, expressive writing, meditation, nutrition education, oncology massage, reflexology, and reiki/healing touch.

Led by new moderator Mr. Galeotafiore, the student council’s mission was very clear in setting a true example for the rest of the school. With their first successful fundraiser in the books, good things are ahead for the student council this year.
