Praise the Lord: Godspell, an Energy Filled Epic

Prepare Ye the Way of The Lord…

Pegasus Production Company’s Godspell rocked Henderson Theater this past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the show’s opening weekend.

Going to opening night on Friday with the Digital Network crew and the Saturday show by myself, I can confidently say that Godspell is a must-see production. With great acting and fantastic performances by the members of the pit band, the show was an upbeat, rock’n’roll epic that retold the Gospel of Matthew in a new light.

The show had an electric opening with a very energetic rendition of “Prepare Ye,” which featured the majority of the cast on the stage singing for the first time during the performance. I do not want to give too much away, but it is certainly not the last time the majority of the cast was on stage singing together in perfect harmony.

The terrific performances of J.P Shimkus ‘25, as Jesus, and Nick Buchanan ‘25, as Judas were easily highlights of the show. Shimkus and Buchanan are only sophomores and with such great performances in only their second year, it is safe to say that the future is bright for Pegasus.

The performances I attended were wildly entertaining, as well as quite comedic. I found myself, along with the rest of the audience, laughing during many of the scenes. We clapped and sang to many of the songs.

Two notably funny actors were returning Pegasus members, James Nardiello ‘24 and Hudson Furnari ‘23. Remembering their hysterical performances in last year’s musical, 13, I did not expect for them to be as funny as last year, but I was proven wrong. Their ability to bring the play to life with humor is unmatched.

Also, the actresses that were part of the production wowed the audience with their phenomenal voices. It is very hard to single just one of them out, as they all had their chances to show off their voices in different songs.

No Pegasus show ever disappoints, and Godspell continued that trend. The crew did a flawless job with sound and a great job with lights, reminding the audience that the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show are just as important as the show itself.

This review certainly does not do the show justice. Luckily, there are still three more chances to see Godspell.

The final performances are March 16 (5 P.M.), March 17 (7 P.M.), and March 18 (7 P.M.).
